Rough Guide to London

Rough Guide to London - A short sketchbook project
first year
The derelict, disrepair & disused
Tuesday 4th Oct- Thursday 13th October

Old disused glass factory in Hoxton
Mixed media: Ink & photography

So we've been set our first project of the year called, 'Rough Guide to London'. Our textiles group have been split into 5 and allocated separate but different areas that represent London. Our group were sent to explore Brick Lane, Hoxton & Spitalfields. We were to build a collection of imagery, found things, notes, drawings & any other inspiring, interesting & unique things that arise on our journey. We collated the information (presented in an A5 sketch book),  in a visually interesting way. Looking at other artists eg. John Bently 'Poetry of lost things'  and their presentations.
Starting my journey in Hoxton, walking through the back roads & eventually ending up in Brick Lane/ Spitalfields I discovered many derelict and uninhabited buildings & rundown factories. This was interesting to photograph, I also collected found things.
I continuously came across discarded alcohol bottles, cans & cigarette packets, I saw a pattern developing here & thought this said a lot about the area and the people living in it. Using this information, (still taking pictures of buildings and found things on the way) I decided to take the brief literally.
Using collage to explain my findings visually, this included the collected found things, photography, drawing & also, textures that reminded me of the area. Including netting, sandpaper & plastic whole punched mesh
