Lecture- The Power of Material Making

The Power of Material Making
Theory

Lucy Gundry
Friday 28th October
The lecturer discussed the energy/aura that surrounds a hand crafted object in opposition to that which is mass produced. Example: Japanese term 'Wabi Sabi': concept of beauty- simple, natural, well worn (my words), made with love, care, individual take, thoughtfulness. Technology is continuously developing, new materials are being created and therefore textiles are becoming more innovative & unusual. With the balance between hand made and mass produced becoming blurred, due to the development of new technologies/processes will the uniqueness and exclusivity of hand made products no longer be required? To what extent can tools be used before the end product is not handmade?
She also talked us through some of the modern textile technology being used-
  • Natural
  • Synthetic (Man made)
  • Digital (Coded pixels)
  • Techno/ Smart (technology built into textiles)
  • Nano textiles (Nano fibres)
  • Geotextiles (used in conjunction with soil)
  • Biotextiles  (Surgical, Artificial skin)
  • Ecotextiles (non toxic)
Quote from V&A website 'Power of making', 'For many people, making is critical for survival. For others, it is a chosen vocation: a way of thinking, inventing and innovating.'
V&A Exhibition - 'Power of Making'
I found this exhibition extremely inspiring- being able to see how designers- both world known & amateur use unique materials creatively & in a modern way.  The exhibition featured over 100 hand crafted objects. The 'E-shoe' in particular stood out to me- why? because it's bold, synthetic looking & I feel links to my Pop-up1 collection where I've used colourful toys to express my idea of comfort. I also liked the expressiveness of the work and enjoyed seeing the traditional methods of textile making still being used today alongside the contemporary.
Sadly I was unable to take photographs as cameras were not allowed. I was particularly inspired by the following designers/artists- Sandra Buckland 2008 knitted dress/Shauna Richardson Crochetdermy bear/Spray on dress Fabrican LTD  2010- Science in style but am unable to add picture due to copyright issue.
