Lecture- Trade Between East & West

Trade Between East & West
Theory

Dr. Clare Rose
Friday 18th November
Another lecture from Clare Rose who I really enjoy listening to; salient points covered-

  • Many of the things we believe to be British are actually imported from the east and west.
  • Everything's from India - (comedy show 'Goodness Gracious Me!')
  • Empress Josephine of France (Kashmir shawl dress, 1809)
  • Printed textiles (originally) calico. (in West, Calico= thick heavyweight cotton)
  • Muslin (originally) fine sheer cotton. (in America thick not so nice)
  • Master dyers of the world - 11 stages of creating Indian fabric chintz
  • Trade:South-east Asia (‘Spice Islands’) for spice, coffee and tea/Africa for gold and ivory.
  • Why Indian textile? luxury goods not available

This was another thought provoking lecture and I look forward to the next.
Victoria and Albert Museum, Indian and British, in the South Asian (Nehru) Gallery
On this guided tour of exhibition, we looked at the original Indian Chintz fabric and other Indian traditional textiles that we get imported to.
