Another lecture taken by Clare Rose, discussing exoticism and what people define as exotic, Orientalism in fashion (Poriet): Orient= east Istanbul, central Asia, Iran Iraq Japan, South East Asia, India. Galliano's Koranic text on shoes caused outcry. We looked at Japanese influences in art & design - Edward William Godwin Japanese sideboard (Japanese use floor to sit, therefore designed for western use) Vincent Van Gough was also influenced by Japanese. We were shown a famous painting of Algerian prostitutes in a Harem, westerners were intrigued by these uncorseted and veiled eastern women. Scheherazade, staged by the Ballet Russes featuring uncovered women 1911. As alway, I was facinated by Dr Rose's lecture and her personal thoughts and feeling about this subject.
